Why Church…
I truly think that everyone,
at some time in their life, will ask the question “Why should I go to church,
or maybe they might ask themselves, why should I believe in Jesus Christ?”
If you haven’t asked that
question I would say that you need too. As a young lad I grew up in church. As
far back as I can remember we always went to church. There was no arguing about
going or not, it was as automatic as getting up for school or work. You woke
up, got dressed, ate breakfast and waited for the time to leave the house.
Today is much different.
There are a lot of good parents out there that will take their family to church
on regular bases, and then there are those that don’t. Well we have all heard
the Bible verse that reads, “Spare the rod and spoil the child!” We, and notice
I said “We” as the baby boomers have to thank for this lack of discipline. We
decided that we wanted to be our children’s best friends instead of being the
parent that God created us to be. We did not push our kids to go to church
because we were living in rebellion of our parents for making us go to church.
Since our time we have seen the church decline in just about every way.
Proverbs 22:6 says “Train up
a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from
it.” This is a great verse. For the baby
boomers we were trained to grow up under Gods authority and now we are
returning to church, but what about our kids? Were they trained up to follow
God? Did they see an example of this obedience in us? Well for some of us we
are seeing the fruits of our labor but for most of us there is not much, if
any, fruit to be seen. Most us are having a hard time returning…
This brings me back to the
original question… Should we question ourselves about church and Christ? For
some folks they don’t have to ask those questions because they already know the
answer. For others let me say this; due to the nature of our society today we
need to make sure of our motives for going to church and professing Christ. If
you are going to church to save face or to gain something from the congregation
you are in trouble. If you use the term “I am a Christian” then you better
prepared to back that up. Both of these things are becoming pretty obvious of
high level people and the main problem is that they may be fooling some of us
but they are not fooling God. There will be a lot of so called Christians that
will be hearing the words, “Depart from me for I never knew you!”
The obvious answer to the
questions above is a question itself… What
do I believe? Jesus made it very clear in John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one
goes to the Father except thru Me!”
So what do you think, should
we go to church, should we ask why Jesus? Come find out this month of October
on Wednesday nights as we study the video series “Why Jesus”. Now more than ever we should be getting
prepared for battle. The spiritual battle between good and evil…
No apologies, Just Jesus…
