The First Potluck
We as a church family all know that when we get together for some sort of event and have a potluck we always have plenty of food. It has never been a question as to whether church folk can cook or not. It is a lot of fun to get together, break bread, laugh and have good fellowship with each other. This is what families do.
When I was a young lad our
family would have a family reunion at least once every two years if not every
year. It was always amazing to me how much fun we had as a huge group of
people. I have a sea of cousins, aunts and uncles. My mom and my aunts would
all get together and cook like there was no tomorrow and would laugh and have a
great time. My dad and my uncles would either cook on the grills or tell war
stories of family life and it was all so surreal. All the kids never had a dull moment. I never
played so hard and so long. There was always some sort of excitement. I mean,
someone had to break an arm or turn an ankle, or scrap the hide off of a knee
or elbow… you know what I am saying??? J
At night if you could keep your eyes open long enough you could not walk thru the house as there were people laying everywhere. Getting to the bathroom was a chore all by itself. Ahhh those were the days.
I wonder what went through
Jesus’ mind when He looked out across the sea of people just before he
implemented the first potluck. The feeding of the five thousand was an epic
event. With wives and children it is said that it was literally about 15,000
people give or take a few!!! The disciples freaked out and told Jesus that we
can’t feed all these people and it is getting late… send them away… you can
imagine how nervous they were. (O ye of little faith)
Jesus said, “Make the people sit down”. John 6:10 So they did as He instructed and Jesus took a few loaves of bread and a few fish and blessed them and multiplied them so that after all the people ate till they were full there was 12 baskets of food left over. This is a reminder of our reunions and the church potlucks we have. There is always food left over…
When was the last time you
allowed Jesus to feed you? Did you give Him the chance to truly feed your soul?
Jesus said, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.” John 6:51
When you allow Jesus to feed
you there will always be food left over for we can never hold all of His great
blessings…
My cup runnith over…..
