A Legacy:
As far back
as I can remember my dad went out of his way to decorate the house for
Christmas. I remember him telling me as we stood on the roof in the cold,
“Anything worth doing needs to be done right”. All I could think about was how
high that second story roof looked off of the ground. Back then it looked about
a 180 feet to the ground but, in reality, it was only about 20 feet. Dad would
say, "Hang those lights along the edge of the roof and make sure they are
straight”. Funny though, ever since I have been buying houses I tend to look
for ones with an easy pitched roof and
one story… go figure… J
I remember one year when there was a light display contest. Dad became an electrician over night as he connected wire and lights together to make a 2 story Christmas tree. It was about 16 feet wide at the bottom and stretched to the roof of the second story eve. It was massive and very cool! In the yard he put up wooden carolers that he painted and cut out himself. He placed them in the yard and wrapped up big concrete blocks to look like presents around a tree in the yard. The funny thing is that someone tried to steel them. I guess they thought we would be crazy enough to put real presents in the yard… duh… Anyway, we got up one morning and they were out in the yard, away from the tree and some of them were torn open…
Well dad has
long since passed away but I love to decorate the house every year. I always
look to do something different each year… not just the same old thing. I get
this from Dad. Well, it has been passed down because Brandon, our youngest, loves
to decorate the house - inside and out. When we get together to get started we
always talk about what we are going to do. The legacy continues as I tell him
to hang the lights along the eve and make sure they are straight… J Yes,
I did learn something from Dad. Let the kids do the scary stuff !
There are a
lot of traditions you can do with your kids & grandkids. One that we
started is going to a live tree farm and cutting a fresh tree. The boys love
it. Getting to cut their own tree has become something special. They
allowed us to get away with an artificial tree for a few years, but I think
this year they are going to try to out rank us. Our older cub is insistant on
a live tree as is the younger cub. When they were young we read the Christmas
story in Luke to them every year to instill in them the true reason for the
season.
Legacy’s can
be a great thing. They can be as simple as praying with your children and
grandchildren. (Not letting the grandparents off of the hook either) You can
also start a tradition with them. Teach them the ways of the Lord. Teach them
how to build and construct. Teach them the Love of Christ… Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a
child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach him
how to fish and feed him for life…
