'Tis the Season:

Well it is hard to think that it is already the end of the year. We have seen a lot of good and bad throughout the year and it would seem that Satan is trying to have the final word in this 2012 year. Lots of things have caused disappointment and now we have seen a great injustice in the slaying of young children. (I read this morning that they will be putting the first two children to rest today).

In church yesterday, we took time in silence to think and pray for the families that were involved in such a travesty. Even now it brings tears to my eyes to think that there are people in our society that would even think of doing something so horrific.  Some of you out there may be asking the question, “Why would this happen, or why would God allow this to happen?”

First we need to remember one thing… free will. When God put us on this earth He gave us free will. This means that we can live however we want to. We can perform bad deeds, we can talk how we want to, we can slander all we want, and we can kill, steel and destroy. But, even though we have free will doesn’t mean that we won’t be held responsible.  (Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”)

When we see things like this happen in our world we need to remember that God did not want this to happen; He wants us to come to Him, to love one another and to value life. We are to show love to children just as Jesus taught us to do, after all, God showed us His love for us, His children. (John 3:16   “ For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son…”)

The problem today is that we have forgotten what God’s love is all about. We have put ourselves in harm’s way by living for fame, fortune, possessions and a world that is rejecting God and His Son, Jesus…(Luke 10:16c “he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me”) We have thrown Jesus out of school, sporting events, court rooms, federal offices and everyday events and yes, even some churches. After all this world has done to reject God, we ask the question “why does this happen?”  It happens to the best of us and the worst of us due to the fact that most have brought up a new generation of lost people. Most have decided that church is no longer important. Most have taught our children that God is not to be feared because they don’t show fear in God.

The good news….  Luke 2:10-14 “Then the angle said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11) For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior who is Christ the Lord. 12) And this will be a sign to you; you will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” 13) And suddenly there was with the angle a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying; 14) Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

So, what does this mean to you and me? The promise of peace and goodwill would come to those who welcome God’s only Son
